Bought a beautiful hand made full log-bedroom set of red cedar. The tops of the dressers and night stands are of about 3/4 inch planed red cedar and have split. Not sure how long ago as we use runners on top. They were good at least through the first dry season. Both pieces we have had two years. We lacqured them on the outside but not on the inside so as to take adventage of the cedar smell. Aparently this was a mistake. ? is if we can get them into a humid environment will the cracks close up a bit so we can put some wood filler in the cracks and then seal the inside also. Any ideas appreciated.
The dresser has two narrow cracks/splits about foot long. The night stand is wider maybe 1/8 inch and runs end to end, both are right in the plank not where the planks are joined. They have 2 inch cedar 1/4 rounds framing them.
Adevilch~ it cannot be clamped. As I stated the top is "framed" or bordered with 2 inch cedar quarter-round. Thanks for taking the time to answer though.
You need to remove any finish you put on and then boil a towel in a pot of water and lay it on the top(damp not soaked) .. it will get the crack closer.. let it sit there for about a 1/2 hour this will make the wood swell but it will also raise the grain a little, so you will have to let it dry overnight and sand back down with 220 grit paper. then save you sanding dust and mix it with a stainable wood glue and fill any remaining crack with that, then refinish BOTH sides
good luck
I want to paint my master bedroom and we have a tan color now, we also have cedar rustic furniture and I'm not sure what color would be best. Thanks in advance!
A bedroom is very personal. Think about what colors make you feel relaxed. Personally I try not to "over-beige" as so many do today. It's just paint and you can change it pretty easily. With cedar rustic furniture I'd go for a nature color like a light sage green or something in the dusty blues.

what loooks the best? what shows you've invested the most? dark wood, light wood? i like oak...aged oak...but what about for bedroom furniture? what lasts the longest? im trying to do some research and im not doing well.... ash, beech, birch, cedar, chesnut, ebony, mahogany, maple, oak, pearwood, pine, rattan, rosewood, satinwood, walnut...these are the woods i researched and im still clueless...please help. and what stores or websites will sell quality canopy beds? thats what im looking for.
Go with what you like the best. Luckily your fav is a durable long lasting wood.
Relates to high end bedroom furniture.
What should be used, if so?
How long will it last?
Anything else that I should know?
Since time immemorial . . . unless you are like eagle and chew light bulbs for breakfast. Due to health reasons, I can't. (Guess the only thing sensitive about eagle is his feelings, since he seemed to take my question as a personal affront.) The fact that cedar is a great insecticide and herbicide is an indication that it has toxic properties. There is Terpene oils, cedrus, etc. Can cause respiratory and neurological problems. Here's a link to start you off http://www.trifl.org/cedar.shtml , but there is more information if you look under individual substances. Not everything toxic is lethal or immediately so.
All that is not really the focus of this question. I wanted to know if cedar, pleasing aroma or not, can be sealed, and that question has been asked and answered. Any debate or comment to anything else--start your own post.
Thanks for the answers.
yes it can be sealed... talk to your local hardware store about products- somthing lik miniwax wood seal... sand down the surface before applying this should last around 5-6 years indoors under normal conditions, if its not under anii high traffic or outside.
Hi,
my bedroom has cedar ceiling and floors are oak. The room is big and ceiling is high. I do not know what color would fit with the ceiling and floor. Right now it is white but looks cold and faceless. I would like it to be romantic and warm. I do not have any furniture yet (except bed).. so I can be flexible with color.
I was thinking to pick from following colors that I would like (as general colors for furniture, curtains, walls etc): white, beige, gold, dark brown, burgundy red.
It seams that the ceiling with those white walls is too dominating.
Please, if you have any advice for me, I would be very thankful.

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find colors that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think a gold like "nugget" (# 6697) might be a great choice.
You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
