We bought some new solid oak bedroom furniture recently, and the oak keeps splitting. The company has already replaced the wardrobe doors but it has happened again, and the other furniture is now showing small cracks. The room is normal tempurture, it cost us a small fortune, and we are at our witts end thinking what to do. Any advice greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you may have a high humidity level in your home which can cause cracking in any wood...Moisture gets in and causes the cracking..Get a dehumidifier and place it in the bedroom..That may fix the problem..Also use some lemon oil on your furniture to protect it or look for some polish called Guardsman..It also is very good in conditioning the wood..I hope this helps.. i would like to know what companies in the UK make good quality solid wood bedroom furniture. i would preferably like furniture which is quite traditional. also, what is a wood veneer? should i keep away from furniture which is made from a mix of solid wood and veneers?

oh i see, i understand now. i am thinking of something less rustic perhaps because i would like a dressing table, wardrobes and bdside tables to match. i will keep that in mind though. thanks

Veneer is a thin film of wood. Oak veneered furniture is usually made of particle board or softwood with just a thin covering of oak on the outside. Oak furniture will last hundreds of years. Veneered particle board will start to look scruffy after about five years.
Good quality oak furniture is usually handmade in small workshops and is very expensive. However, antique oak furniture (remember I said it lasts hundreds of years) is relatively cheap. For some reason, dark wood is out of favour. Have a look around the auction rooms and you may well find what you are looking for.
Does anyone know any brands of solid oak furniture made in the USA? We have some Eagle furniture that I know is, but the shop that carries it in my town is going out of business and we need a bedroom set. Anyone know of a company that sells only solid oak and made in the USA?

Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.

The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.

The last priceless piece at Lovejoy Antiques , sorry to say, has been sold. What a pity. And the mullet is gone! BBC Video has released Lovejoy: The Complete Season Six , the final go-around for the international hit mystery/comedy series starring the rascally Ian McShane as the intrepid, shady antiques "divvy" Lovejoy. There's no loss of quality in this last "series" of episodes which originally aired in the U.K. in the fall of 1994 (although there are some curious character backtracks from the previous season), so at least the series goes out on a positive note...with a positively delightful final wrap-up that sums up the roguish Lovejoy character to a "T." Of course, Lovejoy fans are going to bid on this 3-disc, 10-episode set, but newcomers - even at this late stage - are encouraged to browse for something they might like.
