Solid Wood Bedroom Furniture Set

Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.

The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.

I am looking for a bedroom set. But the stuff I am seeing at the places like Leon's and The Brick are really not very good quality. I would like solid wood furniture, not all veneers.

Does anyone know a great furniture store that sells quality solid wood furniture?

Stoney Creek Furniture used to have a nice selection. Your best bet, though, would be to go through the Yellow Pages and ask questions.

If I still lived in southern Ontario, I'd go to Mennonite country or Niagara on the Lake and shop there. As it is, I live North, so our solid oak bedroom furniture was custom built to our specifications by a local carpenter. Not expensive ... doesn't show the dust ... and looks very nice.

I have an old wooden bedroom set. (I doubt that it is solid wood). I would like to get rid of the oak color and paint it white... How I do this without the paint flaking/scratching off? I have a headboard, chest, dresser, and bookshelf.

Preparation is everything when rehabilitating wooden (solid or MDF) furniture.

The wax will have to removed. A weak ammonia solution would do that. Wear goves and have a window open for ventilation. You should rinse this off with clear water and wipe with many clean rags. TSP dissolved in water also works and also requires rinsing.

I painted a dining room sideboard from the 1950's and an Edwardian gramophone stand last summer. The sideboard was in very rough shape because the previous owners had let the surface become quite dry. I doubt if it had seen wax for 30 years, when I got it. I only had to wet wipe it down before priming.

The gramophone cabinet was a walnut-veneered piece that had to have the wax build up removed prior to priming,

I went to the hardware store and asked what kind of primer would have the least amount of stink and be the most effective. I think that I used a shellac-based for the gramophone cabinet and whatever latex primer that I had laying around for the sideboard. Shellac-based primer dries in minutes.

Since the paints were very deep colours, I applied two coats of a semi-gloss latex. When that was dry, I applied two coats of water-based clear urethane.

The finshed products are now a stereo cabinet (the sideboard) and a liquor cabinet with a light when you lift the old gramophone lid. They take pride of place in our living room.

My mother painter a dresser for me and my sister which never once flaked. It did chip from a few knocks when we moved, but that was carelessness and had nothing to do with the paint.

We live on a well and septic tank. As a result, we do not clean our painting tools. Therefore, I use inexpensive but appropriate rollers and brushes.

I am interested in a 5-pc bedroom set from Ashley, which the saleslady said was "solid wood." However, friends tell me that Ashley sells mostly pressed wood or not-wood furniture, which could explain the low prices. Clearly, solid wood is better, but for a couple dressers and a bed, is there a big difference? This won't be heirloom furniture, and I'm not a decor freak. Just want something nice and useful, and solid.
Oh, how can I tell if it's solid wood, I can't pick it up to see weight nor drive a nail through it!

I sold quality furniture for years and people are under the misconception that veneers are bad and they are not. Most furniture today is veneers and it is quality if you are buying a quality line. Like anything else, everything is driven by the quality of the manufacturer. Ashley is not a quality line but is serviceable if it meets your needs and your budget. Ashley is not non wood or pressed wood which is MDF. MDF is a low end manufactured wood look and is incredibly heavy. So weight is not your defining factor in whether you have real wood or not. There are lines that offer solid wood furniture but not as many as offer veneers. Veneer is real wood but layered to make the designs and shapes. And I can name lines of highly expensive furniture pieces that are going to be veneers. Your Ashley salesperson is telling you the pieces are real wood because veneers are real wood. Ashley just doesn't happen to be the highest quality manufacturer. If you like the set, buy it. If you want more information go to high end stores and ask them about their lines. I think you will be surprised at how few pieces if any are "solid" wood.

I am remodeling my bedroom. I want a solid wood bed. (Specifically a raised bed (higher tahn normal) with storage srawers in it). but any site will do so long as you can recommend it and it has REAL WOOD. thanks

Drexel Heritage, Thomasville, Maitland-Smith, Laneventure, Henredon, Baker are all good places to look.
