Hi, I don't know much about furniture other than saying something is cute or not, but I was told by a friend that I should stick with solid wood construction and avoid veneers, but I noticed that there are a lot of different varieties of wood used in different furniture sets. So far I've seen pine, maple, oak, alder, cherry, and mahogany. What's the best? What makes it best? What makes other wood cheap or poor quality? And is there a site online that can help to better explain why I want a better quality wood for my furniture and what in fact makes it better? I'm really hoping someone can help me out because I want to buy a nice quality bedroom set and I don't want to pay top dollar for junky furniture either. Thanks in advance.

The wood species is up to you, what do you like? If you choose a posted set, the posts should be solid wood. Any panels you choose can be veneered or solid. Veneer panels are much better than they used to be. The glues used are better and manufacturers are willing to stand behind them. Solid wood panels are beautiful but may require multiple glue joints to achieve adequate width. This can create inconsistent grain patterns. If you see something that looks good at the store, but when you get it it doesn't look so great, go back to the store and demand the display. They tend to show the best.

I need to sell our bedroom furniture set, but I have no idea what type of wood it is. My husband owned it before we got married and he doesn't even know! It looks like light oak, but with darker circles throughout it. He thinks they're called knots, but I cannot find anything online. If anyone has an idea, thanks!
Depending on the size of the 'circles' . . . the first thing that came to mind was "Birds-Eye Maple". The 'circles' are pretty small and literally look like birds' eyes on blonde colored wood. It's nice wood and certainly a much harder wood than pine. I think that pine has occasional 'circles' (pine knots) but usually more 'swirls' than knots. If you can make a small dent with your fingernail in an inconspicuous spot, then it is probably a 'soft wood' (such as pine). If not, i would think you are dealing with something other than pine wood.

my bedroom furniture set is a wood choclate brown color.... the wood has gotten scratched and looks ugly... i want to know if their is a color spray can, that can match the color to my bedroom furniture to cover up the scratches? is this a hard project? should it be professionally done?
They make a crayon type stuff that comes in all colors and all you do is color the scratches.It leaves the wax substance in the scratch.You could also find a stain to match and use an artist brush ( a real thin one) to put the stain in the scratch.Hope this helps you.

If you are looking to buy furniture to last a lifetime you'll be making an investment. Look for furniture without pressed board, veneers or plastic runners or parts of any kind. Real wood is going to be heavy. Make sure all the drawers and doors open very smoothly. You'll know real from cheap after you look at furniture for awhile. Have fun and good luck!!

Archdiocese report must be watershed for Church
Later this week, potentially the most explosive report on clerical sex abuse in this country will be published. It is a report, we are being forewarned, that will shake the Church in Ireland to its core.
The 700-page report of the Dublin Archdiocese Commission of Investigation comes four years after the Diocese of Ferns report which saw that diocese branded as the "worst in the world". This latest report is expected to be even more devastating than Ferns and will focus on the failure of the Church authorities and the State to curb the activities of predatory priests, serial sex abusers within the Church and the subsequent systematic cover-ups of these activities by those in authority.
There have been grim warnings all week both in the media and, indeed, from church pulpits, that the revelations contained within the Dublin Archdiocese report will make for very uncomfortable reading. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin himself warned several months ago that the report would shock everyone. Just a few months after everyone learned of the sickening depravity visited upon children in reformatories and industrial schools in Ireland in previous decades, the latest revelations are set to make the Catholic Church in Ireland a "far humbler Church", in the words of Archbishop Martin.
