remove film from wood furniture?
Cherry Willett Dining Set(sold)

I have been using pledge spray polish on my cherry dining room furniture and there is a smeary film on the table top.How do I get rid of it and what do I use to restore the lustre?

I would clean it with a Murphy's Oil soap solution (read the label for dilution), and then try a paste wax.

What type of furniture would look best with Brazilian Cherry wood floors?

I recently purchased a home w/ these floors all throughout the first floor. I am trying to determine what type of furniture would look best, and what types of colors match well. In particular, our dining room set and bookcases.

a nice off white leather couch would look nice with that floor. just think of your hardwood floor like jeans or the color white. itll match pretty much everything. you can always get a magazine on hardwoodfloors or just something like elle decor that shows interior design photos with hardwood floors and then you can get a mind set of what you like with your new floors . think of a theme first and then match it all together . an asian theme would look nice . and is very popular .. you can purchase a white or red sofa set and get matching pillows with the cherry blossom prints on them ... pictures of chinese or japanese characters with very nice handpainted nature pictures sets a mood .. lighting is important... all im saying is its up to you use ur imagination and do the research online and magazines are a lot of help. hope you have fun and accomplish something to be proud of.

How do you remove water stains from wood?

More specifically:
~It's a cherry wood, dining room table that seats six.
~The water stains are three or four round stains the size of shot glasses. So the 'water' stain is actually whiskey.

So i need a quick/good fix for small stains on a large piece of furniture.

Thanks!

Easiest fix in the world. Rub a little mayonnaise on the ring. Let it enetrate for a few minutes then wipe off with a cloth and buff the shine back up.

I couldn't believe this would work but it actually repaired where my daughter splashed nail polish remover on my cherry coffee table.

Are there any commercial furniture polishes that don't leave a waxy residue?

We just inherited a cherry dining room set and buffet from my mother-in-law. I've always used Orange glo, Murphy's oil soap, Pledge or Endust before to clean and polish wood furniture.

But for whatever reason, this table gets a waxy buildup on it when I use any of those products (it is sealed wood, though I'm not sure if its shellac or varnish or poly) on it has a smeary, greasy look on it.

Are there any other items I could try that won't harm the wood at all? Its not vintage, its a set she purchased at Ethan Allen about 5 years ago.

Any ideas of other products or methods would be greatly appreciated. For the time being I've just been polishing with a microfiber cloth, but I would like to be able to polish it as well every month or so.

The problem you have, The person that finished(sealed) the table used a water based sealant. That is the reason why when you try to polish it it leaves a "cloudy" look.

Now you I can tell you that I have good news and bad news.

Let's start with the bad. There is only one of two ways to do this.
The right way and the wrong.

The good news. The wrong way has an infinite amount of possibilities.

The right way would be to remove the finish and put a better one on so you don't have that problem anymore.

How to protect the finish on a dining table? » Living Sense

I bought a dining table set from Cost Plus World Market 1 year ago. It’s not the most high quality furniture. The wood is stained very dark/almost black. I’ve noticed that when cleaning the table with a damp cloth/paper, the color rubs onto the cloth, etc.

Is there some kind of product I can buy at the hardware store to protect the top of the table, perhaps some kind of do it yourself sealer or something. Or should I use an acual furniture repair place to coat something on the table?

    thanks.

The traditional sealer for shellac, lacquer, and natural varnish finishes is thinned white shellac. This basic sealer is simply a mixture of 1 part white shellac (4-pound cut) and 3 to 4 parts denatured alcohol. Shellac is suitable for most refinishing jobs, but it cannot be used with polyurethane varnish or with water or NGR (non-grain-raising) stains.

Where shellac cannot be used, the easiest sealer is a commercial sanding sealer. Sanding sealer dries quickly and provides a very good sanding base; it can be used with varnish, shellac, or lacquer. If you plan to finish the piece with polyurethane varnish, read the label carefully; sanding sealer may not be compatible with polyurethane. Sealing is not necessary before finishing with a penetrating resin sealer.
