Wellington architecture prizes reward sustainability
Sustainability is a theme that has been recognised in many of the winners of the Wellington Architecture Awards.
Thirty-two buildings across 11 categories were recognised in the awards announced last night. Judge Angela Foster said the way in which sustainable practices had become central to good design was the main theme across all categories.
"It was just another item, as opposed to a specific thing, which was quite nice to see."
Sustainable designs minimise a building's impact on the environment by enhancing efficiency in the use of materials, energy and development space.
Jasmax designed the BNZ Harbour Quay building, which won a sustainability award, as well as commercial and interior awards. Director Warren Young said sustainability should automatically be part of any good design. "It should be fundamental to what we do."
Ms Foster said other themes among about 60 entries were a tendency towards "nice crisp designs", and more entries in the commercial category.
