Dining Room Furniture

I'm thinking of buying white furniture for our dining room. Is it easy to keep clean and do you think it might chip easily? I just think it has such a fresh look about it.

It depends on how you maintain it.

I've had a dining set made up of a glass & wood(painted in cream) table on chrome and cream coated legs and matching cream leather chairs. My sitting room also has cream leather sofas.

The trick is to keep it clean at all times. Don't let any stain settle in. Avoid sitting on the the leather with deep blue/black jeans. That's the worst culprit.

Can anybody point out some good dining room furniture that would look great for my new house? I don't have any particular taste in furniture, but anything that would look really clean and spiffy would be great. If anybody knows where I can find dining room furniture at a good discount, too with a website, let me know.

Open concept kitchen, table and chairs and such are now a maple finish, new kitchen is a mahogany finish. Dining area runs right into kitchen. Should I have matching furniture?

No, just find other ways to tie the rooms together, for example, if you have stainless steel appliances, get a stainless steel vase or bowl for the table. If you have red placemats, get red accents for the kitchen. Having wood that is different finishes, but still looks good together shows that you put some thought and creativity into the room. It won't look like you walked into the showroom and cashed in on the maple finish close-out sale.

We have a lovely set that we got about 15 years ago and it was probably 10 years old at that time. It is all wobbly but still in good shape. Thanks!!

It all depends upon how it's put together. I'm assuming if there are bolts or screws, you would have figured out how to tighten them. About every 20 years chairs will wood joints will loosen up and need to be re-glued. This is how I do it:
* Label every piece so you get it back in exactly the same position. The only thing worse than trying to decide which of 4 slightly different pieces belongs where is to discover you've got a piece in the wrong place or wrong orientation the next day.
* If there is an upholstered "slip" seat, remove it.
* Remove any corner blocks held in place with screws
* If there are screws or nails in the joints, remove them and throw them away. They do more damage than good.
* Knock the joints apart with a dead blow hammer
* If there are broken or weak dowels, replace them. If you need to remove a broken off stub in a hole. Drill with the next-smaller-sized drill bit, then carefully chisel out the rest.
* Clean up all the joints with sandpaper or a wire plumber's brush. Easy does it, you don't want to change the diameter.
* Get some white glue (plenty of closed time), and put a light layer of glue on both sides of each joint. If you have a chair with a slab seat, my preference is to lay the seat upside down and assemble the legs and stretchers. Then flip it over and do the top. If you have a frame chair, I like to do the front legs together, clamp and set aside for a minute. Then assemble the back frame (often this is OK and does not need to be disassembled). Put the front to back members on, then add the front leg assembly. Use clamps when needed.
* Replace the corner blocks if any.
* Set the chair up on a known flat surface and wrestle it into position where it sits level.
* Wipe off excess glue with a damp rag and double check all the joints for tightness
* Leave undisturbed for 6 hours or more.

Well, something more rustic would probably work. If you went too modern, it would clash with the house. I am not one for being all matchy-matchy with decor, but low lines, sharp corners, and chrome might look a bit odd with a log home. At the same time, something too similar would look monotonous and boring.

If the logs are visible on the inside of the home, perhaps getting something in the same wood, but a different shade of the same color as the wood could work. If the place is log only on the outside and drywalled on the inside, you have more options on the color and type of wood.

You could also go for something that has a stone top or a stone look. You keep with the natural/rustic feel, but don't go overboard on the wood look.

Upholstery (assuming that's what you're doing with the chairs) could be solid or a very simple design - thin lines, but not really stripes or small dots. You don't have to go crazy here either and do leaves or trees to keep with the log home.
