How to arrange furniture in a VERY small living room?
Durian Furniture

My living room is substantially smaller than most of the rooms in my 100+ year old home. I am at a loss as to how to arrange the furnishings! No matter how I do it, it just looks cramped and crowded and boring.

The room measures 10' by 20'. All I have in the room is a sofa, sofa chair, side table, coffee table, and the entertainment center.

The design of the room makes it hard to turn the sofa at a diagonal, because there is a large archway to the dining room at one end, and a staircase at the other end, my front door on the one side, and entry to the hall on the other side.

Are there any good design websites that you know of? Or what would you suggest (i.e. getting rid of some of the pieces or replacing them)?

Thanks!!

i had the same problem and here is my solution..... angle the enterinment center in the corner, on the longet wall in the room place the sofa almost so that it is reaching the very endof the wall. if there is a window in the room place the sofa chair so that it may make an L shape with the sofa leaving a space foe the end table; so that you may place a lamp or something......angle the coffee table in front of the sofas...viola.....you are sitting pretty.

dining room and living room painting?

My mom is painting her living room and dining room. She has somewhat decided on a color. Here is the problem, she wants to seperate the two rooms. (It's L shaped) The dining room is smaller and leads to the hallway and to the kitchen. The living room has several windows in it. The dining room furniture is dark and the living room tables are light. The new couch and recliner are a hot chocolate color and it is hard wood floor in both rooms. Any suggestions how to divide the space without taking away the open feeling using colors and borders and trim. She considered putting up a post on the each side of the wall to seperate the rooms. Any good color ideas and ways to seperate would be great.

Your true local paint store should be able to pick out some great contrasting colors to "seperate" the rooms (no offense to home depot or hardware stores). The posts on the wall seems to be a popular choice lately. Has your mom also considered using a chair rail in the dining room with wainscoting on the bottom, which would add more definition to the dining room. Also too, maybe two different styles of crown moulding on the ceilings using the posts as dividers.

Help with my 10 ft. ceiling'd dining room? The walls are so bare, and the furniture looks mini--also,?

it's a small room, maybe 12 x 12, with a French door (to a little sunroom), the stairs to the second floor, and 2 entrances. Ten feet may seem like no big deal, but they're a challenge. How can I decorate the top 2/3 of this room? It's bright yellow with a crystal chandelier......at the entranceway, there are 2 round columns also 10 feet high, any suggestions to warm things up? I have hardwood floors...thanks!

I've seen high ceilings taken care of in two ways.

1) A wide wallpaper border that is not too intrusive, or

2) Buy some nice moulding to place around the perimeter of the entire room near the ceiling. Drop it 1 1/2 - 2 ft. and paint the moulding and the portion above it the same color as the ceiling.

The second would be my choice for you since the room, with columns and chandelier sounds rather formal for a sun room.
Good luck...it sounds like a pretty room!

What color should I paint my living/dining room?

Hi. I need help with painting my living room and the dining room. I have chocolate brown sofas/coffee table, beige carpet in the living room. The Dining room has Oak Furniture. The entrance has Brazilian Cherry Color Hardwood. The living room and the dining room are attached. I don't want to paint it a really dark color because then it will make the entire area seem small. I was thinking of doing something light all over with a dark accent color. Can you please suggest some colors?

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to help you imagine how the colors will look together. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think "eaglet beige" (# 7573) with an accent wall in "enticing red" (# 6600) might be a good choice.

You can take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

You can get color suggestions & for $5 they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

How to coordinate light dining room table with dark wood chairs?

Hi! My husband and I are trying to start decorating our dining room. We can't afford to buy any new furniture (like most newlyweds) so we always gladly accept any furniture that is given to us. My aunt and uncle gifted us with a small dining room table and two chairs (that we want to use in the dining room.) The problem we are having is that the two don't match at all, both in style and color. The dining room table is very similiar to this one, except it has a very high gloss finish:

The chairs look very much like this:

The chairs are a little darker and have floral carving on the upper part of the chair.

My question is what can we do to the chairs (paint, stain, etc) to help them coordinate with the table? We aren't interested in changing the table as it is a nicer piece of furniture. Also I would love ideas that can be carried over to other chairs that we may buy along the way. :) Thanks for any ideas.

You can sand down the chairs and buy the correct color to stain the chairs that match the table. But I do not think that looks bad with the colors. I like the mixture myself. That is a nice set.

  • My New Home: House near Poplar, Highland is city-suburbia compromise for newlyweds

"When we got to this house we loved it, and from then on out, as soon as we walked in the first room (of other houses) and didn't love it, we said, 'Let's just leave,'" Erin said.

Married in July, the South Carolina natives began their Memphis home search just a few months before their wedding. After perusing listings online, Matt encountered Realtor Jen Carstensen of Keller Williams Realty at an open house.

"I really liked that house, but we weren't ready to buy yet," said Matt, who nevertheless took Carstensen's contact information.

He moved to Memphis in June 2008 for his job as a packaging process engineer for Smith & Nephew. Erin stayed behind in South Carolina, where she worked as a kindergarten teacher, but when she visited Matt's Downtown apartment in April, the couple kicked their search into full gear.

Looking online with Carstensen, they narrowed their choices to about 20. Once Erin arrived in town, they got the list down to 10 serious contenders.

Beautiful Dining Room Furniture for Your Home | Farticle.net

As the gathering place of your home, your dining room should be warm, inviting, and relaxing, with décor that’s suitable for casual family meals as well as more formal gatherings and occasions. Dining room furniture must be functional, but to be truly practical, it also needs to comfortable. Selecting the right dining room furniture is an important decision. Here are a few tips for finding beautiful dining room furniture for your home.

The backbone of any dining room is the dining set itself. Purchased together or separately, the dining room table and chairs serve as the centerpiece of the room, and also perform the most essential function of the room: serving food to family and guests.

Choosing simple and timeless pieces is one of the best ways to ensure your furniture will remain stylish for a long time. Parson chairs, like the Microfiber Parson Side Chairs, are an excellent option, offering clean, simple lines that work well with any décor. Named for the Parsons School of Design which originally introduced them, Parsons chairs have become a popular and classic dining room option.
