I am planning to do solicitation over the internet to offer my services for new home owners or to those that are planning to remodel their homes. I do custom cabinetry, built-in furniture pieces, custom cabinets. We achieve the look or style the customer prefers using the wood or finish that appeals to them.

We had a sofa and 2 chairs custom made. They are beautiful but the backs are too tall for our home. We just realized it after they were delivered today. They are upholstered, NOT slipcovered. Can the backs be cut about 4" and reupholstered?

yes but as you know it will cost you a good penny once a custom job is done the maker hates going back and making changes after the finish product. 1. they don't have any more of the upholstery.2. now its more time spent on a finish product. you should check with the maker some wont do it unless they remake the whole thing. good luck.

Specifically, for the home-run or self-employed. A question for a school class requires the answer to this question, and it's impossible for me to research accurately thus far! The big companies are difficult enough to get answers from, but the smaller, conglomerate companies is what I need input on the most. Thanks!

The average profit for a small custom furniture business is hard to estimate , i have my own custom trim business and often have custom furniture pieces to make .
Depending on the material that the customer wants the furniture made from , depends on the cost of materials ...
Then you have the time it takes to mill the material and build the furniture , then the time to finish for example stain and lacquerr or paint .
Then you have to deliver andsometimess install the piece .

From my ownexperiencee to keep the cost of the furniture down to a realistic purchase price , after materials and labor are off the total there should be approx 15% profit left over .

You will have better luck doing the work just like you are and selling it through a local furniture store(mom and pop). Let your reputation create the business for you. A manufacturer will want too much of your money, or they will make what you should be making.
