Worth Noting in Business: Bakersfield tops for starting a business ...
Bakersfield is among the top 50 places to launch a business in the United States, according to a new list by CNNMoney.com.
The city's small business growth rate, reported at 9 percent, was significantly better than the 5.92 percent average across the "best places" list. Other Bakersfield statistics cited by the Web site were less favorable, such as the city's relatively low per-capita income and low concentration of college graduates.
Other California cities on the list include Fresno, Hanford, Merced, Modesto and Stockton.
State Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, has scheduled a hearing Oct. 21 in Fresno to delve deeper into reports of high electricity bills this summer.
The 6:30 p.m. meeting at Hugh Burns State Building, 2550 Mariposa Mall, Assembly Room 1036, follows a hearing last week at which Florez pressed representatives of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and the state Public Utilities Commission for explanations as to why some local customers' bills were so high in recent months.
