I want a platform bed that almost sits on the floor and extends at least 5-6 inches past the mattress.
"Cheap" is relative. $6,000 is cheap compared to $10,000... which are the prices you might be talking about if you're thinking about buying a knock off of a Mies Van Der Roh Design.
If you mean $200 "cheap", go to IKEA.
Try the link below, it has some neat stuff... but I don't know if it's in the price range you're looking for.

Some things look so simple but they're expensive because they're made by a famous designer. I think the right people in China could cheaply make a good replica with quality material, saving lots if it's all shipped home in the one container. Anyone have experience in this field?
Making cheap replica's is what China does.
This is one of the reasons that good American manufacturing jobs have moved overseas. Spurred on by US government deregulation of the last 30 years, and the tax avoidance of capitalists.
Replica's, unless it is by the designer, can become patent infringement, and subject to Patent law enforcement.

I bought most my furniture through a home designer because she basicially designed my home inside with the builders and the furniture is unlike you can find at a furniture store....how much do you think she marked it up? plus she designed how everything looks inside.
you are looking at 100% off of the shelf, store quality, for designer level in excess of 1000%, but you are paying. for someone to do the work that you could have done just as easily, and that is in essence how they make a living. a good quality living room suite can be had for under $1000, add a few fancy fabric colors and hard sell, and some sweet talk, and you have the bottom line of your bill.

What you're looking for is called either furniture design, industrial design, etc.
These are legitimate degrees that can be earned in a four-year arts college, something like RISD or MassArt where there is a broad variety of majors that will give you the best education in industrial design, etc. The only thing is you have to really really want to design some furniture, etc.
I suggest looking up four year art schools such as:
RISD
MICA
MassArt
SAIC
Pratt
Parsons

'Shabby Chic' creator Rachel Ashwell signs new book Wednesday in Vero Beach
When Shabby Chic opened in Soho in 1989, the store was a vision to behold, with oversized, marshmallow-like chairs piled to the rafters, bolts of calico fabric, Victorian couches covered in oversized linen slipcovers and thrift-store furniture revived with coats of white paint.
Vintage bric-a-brac covered everything from wall space to table tops, and fresh white flowers were dotted around the space in sparkling clear glass containers.
Today, all 15 of founder Rachel Ashwell’s Shabby Chic stores are closed. The 20-year-old brand was hit hard by the economy, and while much of the store’s inventory was “gently worn,” the prices were 21st century.
But out of the ashes, as they say, Ashwell has risen to fight another day. This week new stores are opening in Santa Monica and Soho, scaled way back and, according to Ashwell, with less of a corporate vibe.
“God pulled the plug to save my soul,” Ashwell said. “I am back to my roots and the stores are tiny again and totally bespoke, authentic and a little homespun.”
