I was recently at one in VA Beach and just really fell in love with the furniture and would like to purchase it. I tried to ask them but they had no idea.

They usually have Berkline furniture on display. In some stores, like Magnolia Home Theater, you can purchase them. I would try looking at Berkline online.

It sounds like you are talking about the furniture that builders use to furnish model homes. If that is the case, there are probably a lot of sources. I can't imagine that there is much difference in the methods that builders use to furnish their model homes in Australia and those in the USA.

Furnishing a mosel home is very important to the marketing efforts of any homebuilder. Rarely do they buy the furniture outright. Trends change too often to make that type of investment. The largest builders will sometimes have a decorator on staff who plans and excutes the decoration and furnishing of their model homes. Some builders hire the services of a decorator on a contract basis. Some small builders may do it themselves.

In any event, there are all kinds of deals made. It is not unusual for decorators to donate their services in return for the advertising they are allowed to place in the house. In turn, some furniture companies provide the furniture for free for the advertising involved. Everyone is aware that new homebuyers are usually soon in the market for new furnishings and a lot of sales are at stake. Finding this furniture once it has been used in a model home is another story altogether.

In my part of the USA, I have seen furniture stores have "model home sales" where they claim to be offering great prices on furnishings used in model homes. Rental and leasing companies usually just put the furniture back in circulation and rent or lease it to someone else.

Best advice is to visit local building sites and have a look at the model homes. I'm betting that you will find information available as to where the furnishings were obtained. Next step is to contact those companies and see what kind of deals they have to offer.

As far as a website that deals with this type of furniture, I couldn't find any specific to your city. Buying outside of your local area might be impractical because of freight costs. You could quickly eat up any savings by buying display furniture with the costs of transporting it from other than local sources.

Good luck with your search for a deal.

can I buy it somewhere once the display homes are no longer display homes?

Furniture from design homes is often purchased by the Home Builder through a design specification from the design firm that has been awarded the interior works of the project. The builder or designer will often store the furniture after the closure of the design home and then re-use the furniture on another project. Sometimes the designer will re-sell the furniture or place in a consignment store. I would recommend that you make inquiries with the home builder/developer or designer. You may find that the furniture is auctioned off.

Best of luck

Retail Sales Up 0.5 Percent for September

    October 14, 2009

Retail sales saw a boost in September, increasing 0.5 percent over August sales, according to the National Retail Federation. The retail industry sales number, which excludes the automobile, gas station and restaurant sectors, was 1.5 percent less than September of last year.

The U.S. Commerce Department, from which the NRF draws its numbers, finds that there was again a moderate increase in most business categories compared to the previous month. Food & beverage stores were up 0.7 percent, and grocery stores specifically saw a rise of 0.9 percent. Health & personal care stores were up 0.8 percent.

Building material & garden equipment dealers remained the odd man out and one of the few categories to see a drop compared to the previous month (down 0.2 percent). However, furniture & home furnishing stores, which were down in August, saw the greatest boost of all the retail categories in September (1.4 percent)....
