Groans, Sneers And 'Flipping'

Demanding an even tougher crackdown on MPs' expenses by Sir Thomas Legg, outlawing what we now know as "flipping".

It was the nearest MPs came, during more than half an hour of questions to Gordon Brown, to mentioning the E-word, expenses: the issue which they haven't stopped moaning about outside the chamber for the past 48 hours.

That's the term for an MP switching the designation of his or her main home and second home. The result is very often that they manage to equip not one home but two at the taxpayers' expense.

Talking of "flipping"... Waiting for PMQs to start (and I've never seen Scottish questions so packed!), I noticed on the Order Paper that Sir George Young's place on the Standards and Privileges Committee is to be taken by David Curry, Tory MP for Skipton and Ripon.

So, naturally, after PMQs I looked him up in "The Complete Expenses File", the Daily Telegraph's essential magazine with a duck (naturally) on the glossy black front cover.

"His designated second home was in London," I read, "where he spent £785 on furniture, until July 2005, when he changed his nomination to a cottage in his constituency. The mortgage is now fully paid off , but he has claimed £3,157 for damp treatment."
