love it? hate it?
total junk? great value?
over the weekend, i bought a set of backyard furniture and one queen bed for the guest bedroom - i used to be anti-IKEA, thinking they all junk and disposable.
now i have a little change of mind - not completely:
1. i think most of their stuff serve the purpose.
2. good value - not something you can passed on to your kids, but for that one summer or two, it works.
3. i've noticed they try hard to be green - lots of recycle material, their package is very plain, no styro foam used in packaging material, no plastic bags at check-out.
4. setup was suprisingly easy - 6 pieces including the queen bed took me 3 hours, instruction and design is clear and simple.
i am not saying that i become a fan of IKEA, i still believe in certain holding value for your home furnitures. what do you think?
i did weeks of research before set on ikea's set, comapring price with WM and target and i have not yet seen a better value set. the new WM opened in my area is even more decked-out than ikea store in my opinion, but I know what you mean, still need to do the homework first.
Some of it is low quality, some of it is surprisingly good value. I always tell people, when you buy a $59 chair, you have an expectation of what you are getting. I have seen $400 chairs that were more stylish, but inferior in quality of materials and construction. I repair them all the time.

Hi there
Just asking for general advice really and opinions. Here's the background:
About six months ago I started experiencing huge problems with my then landlord and knew I needed to get away from the place I was in in Manchester so I applied to the council for council housing. Bidding every week and not hearing back.
Just as I was about to move to a bed and breakfast in Blackpool just to escape where I was a friend found me a privately rented furnished one bedroom flat for £350 a month in Manchester. Every six months the tenancy needs to be renewed when I also need to pay the managing agent a £75 "renewal fee" (if it is renewed of course!).
A few days ago a letter from the Council suddenly came out of the blue offering me a 2 bedroom council flat. The cost working out to about £220 a month. It would have been a property I bid on about two months ago - hence it being so unexpected!
The problem is that where I am right now there is still 4 months of the tenancy left in place. I spoke to the Citizens Advice and they said that there is no way out of the tenancy without being liabel for the full 4 months rent. So, basically, I would need to do a "runner" or pay four months rent to leave (that I can't afford).
Obviously there are huge pros to taking the council property - more secure, not £75 every six month fee, right to buy, bigger place, cheap home insurance and furniture packages offered by them, etc.
The biggest disadvantage is that I would indeed need to do a "runner" to be able to move there. Also, it is in a slightly rougher area of Manchester than where I am now - but that's not a huge problem if I am sensible at night.
Also, if I turn down the council property, I probably won't get offered another one.
So, my question is, would you guys risk doing the runner and take on the council property? Or just stay put?
Sub-letting of either place is not an option - in terms of the council I don't have that right until I have been there for a year. In where I am now it's also not an option according to the contract.
Also, I think the landlord would probably be fine about me moving out early - it's the managing agent that would kick up a huge fuss (he's a *very* slimy kind of guy) - for example, he has in the contract that I can be kicked out if I am more than 7 days late with the rent (which, obviously, is unenforcable by law it has to be 8 weeks late) - but he still does things like that.
Also, if I mentioned to the Landlord about it and it was denied that I could leave early then he would know about my plans so it would make things harder.
Wow, a council flat! I definitely recommend you take it but let's see if there are options with your present place that are better than doing a runner.
The first possibility is the obvious one; ask your landlord what he would be prepared to settle for. If he is sensible, he will take a bird in the hand and negotiate something with you, maybe he will split the difference.
The second possibility (which could be done as well rather than instead) is to see if the council will wait a month or so before you take possession. Don't start by making this request, take the place first and then ask if you can delay your start a little. Explain that you have a commitment, they must have come across this before. Or ask for some renovations to be done before you move in.
The third possibility is to sublet one or other of the properties just to cover the void. Not ideal but you might find someone who needs housing for a short while. You would need permission but your request is reasonable.

I want to design some interiors using a 3D package for the pc. I have tried several home design programmes but I find these very limited for what I want to acheive, The choice of furniture and appliances are limited and the renders are poor. I would like a programme that allows me to design unique peices of furniture and finish with quality renders, textures and lighting effects. Programmes I have considered are turbocad 11 and 3D max but these look complicated I am a complete begineer with this sort of programme and wouldn't have a clue where to start. Can anyone recommend any programmes that will help me acheive what I want that would be fairly easy for a novice to pick up and preferably one with a printed manual rather than an online manual.
Thanks in advance
well for what i think what you want is a really good 3D software, but the problem with this kind of software is that its really a bit tricky to learn and an expensive software.
my advice, is try the older versions of 3D Max, it could still do the trick for you and its more affordable and not that too complicated.
I am currently in design/decor school and I need to give a survey to compile data. I figured I would be more successful posting this than asking in a mall. So would all of you answer these questions...
1. Would you hire an interior decorator/why
2. If so, how would you find that person.
3. Do you own a home?
4. If the decorators services came with your furniture package would this change your opinion?
5 (TOTALLY OPTIONAL!) What is your average household income.
Thanks for all your help.
Oh couple more...
A. What part of the Country do you reside
B. And if decorating services were offered free of charge from a student would you take it?
1. yes especially in my daughters room, we are buying a new house
2. no idea
3. yes actually two
4. no...
5 100000+
i would actually let a student help ...because i figure they would be a little younger than i am and a little more in with what my daughter wants with her new room..we are in the southeastern united states
