leather home remedy for furniture?
090817_00099_07527-8-9-30

is there a home remedy to clean my leather furniture?

Using household products and 'old wives' remedies are very short sighted when it comes to cleaning and caring for leather and can become very costly in the long run as problems they generally cause will be costly to put right. (although it does keep people like ourselves busy as we rush round fixing problems caused by using the wrong things!!!)
Firstly check the type of leather you have so that you understand the results that are possible:
http://www.lttleathercare.co.uk/whatkind ...

You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner. (LTT Leather Shampoo) With light coloured leather dye transfer from clothing can be a problem although using a good quality leather protector (LTT Leather Protect) will help inhibit this.

For dye transfer (which can be a real problem on pale coloured leathers) and ingrained dirt you may need a much stronger cleaner like Strong Cleaner or Maxi Cleaner (this should be used with caution)

DO NOT use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones. (Most 'conditioners' contain waxes or oils) and furniture polish (pledge) contains silicones which will eventually destroy the finish on the leather. Most car cleaners also contain oils or waxes so should not be used as they leave residues on the surface of the leather which attract more dirt which eventually leads to cracking.

BABY WIPES are the worst thing you can use as they will destroy the finish on your leather. This has been verified and proved to be the case. They are actually a very strong product and this is why they break down the finish. Leather is not like skin and should not be treated as such.

Saddle soap should never be usd on upholstery leather or garments it is meant for saddles which are very different from todays finished leathers.

A lot of leather wipes contain chemicals which will also destroy the finish or leave residues on the leather which will damage it. They are not cheap in the long run as you would need a lot to clean. A bottle of foam cleaner should do your car about 3-4 times.

Fairy liquid contains more salt these days to get dishes clean and this will break the finish down on your leather. This has been verified by the manufacturers (as with the baby wipes).

Magic Erasers should not be used unless you are going to renew the finish on you r leather. We have tested these recently and they sand away the top finish on the leather.

Lux flakes (although they used to be a good thing to use) now contain ingredients that will damage the finish on the leather and cause it to peel off like a skin (we have seen these happen hundreds of times at customers who have been ill advised by shops)

You should also follow cleaning with a good water based leather protector which will act like a 'scotchgard' and inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time. Conditioners are totally unnecessary and only a product push by manufacturers.

Dry leather needs rehydrating with water and oils and waxes should not be used as the natural oils do not dry out of leather. Wiping over with a damp cloth regularly will help to do this.

It is important to maintain a regular cleaning regime cleaning dirt off the surface regularly and inhibiting the absorption of body oils into the leather with a protector is the best way of doing this. The only 'moisturizer' a leather needs is from water.

The alternative is a brand new product on the market called Lazy Leather. This is the latest technology in cleaning and combines an effective cleaner with a protector. It is quick and easy to use and should be used as a maintenance product once your suite has been cleaned or from new if you have just bought it.

Using incorrect care products is usually the cause of deterioration in the leather as unfortunately most car care products contain waxes and oils or silicones which do not do the leather any good.

Further cleaning instructions and a care leaflet are avaialable here:

It has been proved that washing up liquid can damage the finish on the leather which is why it

can any body tell me a home treatment for pen marks on leather furniture?

something mabey i can use from my own kitchen.

What to use: Dry-cleaning fluid, Cotton bud, cotton ball; or Aerogard or hairspary, cloth
How to apply: You'll need to do this very arefully and quickly. Apply some dry-cleaning to a cotton bud and write over the pen while also quickly wiping the dry-cleaning fluid off with a cotton ball, replacing it often. You could also spray Aerogard or hairspray, and wipe off with cloth. Be careful with leather and test a patch first.

Also cleaning...
Clean leather once a week with either saddle soap or leather dew. Keep a dedicated cloth in a plastic snap-lock bag for this purpose. Never use water to clean leather because it stiffens it. And always secure a cloth or a T-shirt over the vacuum-cleaner head to prevent scratches in the leather. Most stains can be romoved with dry-cleaning -fluid. After applying the fluid with a cotton ball, sprinkle talcum powder to absorb it. Brush off the talcum powder when it's dry and treat with leathe dew or saddle soap. Never use toothpaste as it can leave dry, rough or bleached spots.

De-clawing a cat re-visited. Skittish cat (putting it mildly), leather furniture, and not home 10 hrs a day.?
modern bright interior

7 years old & he is still skittish around everyone but my son. He has run head first repeatedly into doors to try to get away when he thinks he's trapped. I would love to glue on those soft claw tips, but you don't understand, NOBODY can hold this cat to do ANYTHING to him. I can pet him but my son is the ONLY one that can hold him to pet him. We tried have my son put flea treatment on the back of the neck and as soon as he heard the slightest sound or feels anything he goes berserk and then hides from everyone for weeks afterwords. I've heard both sides of the story with de-clawing and wouldn't do it if I had another choice. Please, any other real suggestions? Nobody's putting anything, softclaws etc. on that cat. I've tried towels around him to hold him but he just freaks out and won't stop until freed. I have 5 scratching posts, what about when I'm not home? I'm not covering and uncovering furninture every time I want to run to the store etc. HELP!

Please don't declaw your cat. Behavioral problems will just get worse and you will hurt your cat. Try Soft Claws. If the cat likes your son, you can have your son apply the soft claws while in a quiet room with nobody else in there so the cat stays calm. Also, try putting cat nip on the scratching posts to encourage him to use them. Some cats don't like scratching posts and prefer the scratching pads. You can get those at most pet stores.

What kind of furniture should I buy for a living room room that houses my Home Theater?
red leather couch

I would appreciate a few suggestions. I was initially thinking of nice leather but I heard it stains quite easily and I don't want sodas/food to spill over while watching TV. Do you have any suggestions for mid-priced furniture? My home theater is quite nice. I spent $10,000 for a Hi-Def TV, Blue-ray player, and Bose speakers. So I am not looking for a cheap look. Definitely nothing as cheap as Ikea or Walmart! But nothing tooo expensive as some of those 100% full top grain leather furniture I have seen in ads costing $3,500. . I am looking for a living room set - Sofas, Loveseat, recliner chair. Any links would be appreciated. Any specific suggestions as to what kind of furniture is resistant to stains, would also be appreciated. Thanks.

idk. But, I do know, I would to come over. Sounds, like your place is the place to be.

Have a good evening.
