Federal funds will be used to reduce truancy
JUNEAU—Dodge County Human Services and Health officials will receive nearly $379,000 from the federal government to help curb habitual truancy among county students.
The Federal Office of Justice Assistance will administer the grant to Dodge County over three years using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, informally known as the stimulus package.
Terrence Deal, of the human services and health department, said the funds will be used to hire four half-time employees; three truancy specialists and one family advocate from Wisconsin Family Ties.
When a student is referred to human services for habitual truancy, a truancy specialist and family advocate will team up and meet with the student, and his or her parents, to discuss community programs and resources the family may be able to tap to reduce truancy.

10/16/09 - A Kentucky man is scheduled to enter pleas this morning to charges that he killed a pair of high school sweethearts in Jefferson County in 1980. 76-year-old Edward Edwards of Louisville has an 11 o'clock arraignment in Jefferson on two counts of first-degree murder. Authorities said he murdered Tim Hack and Kelly Drew, both 19, soon after they left a wedding reception in Sullivan. Edwards was arrested this summer after state justice agents found his D-N-A on Drew's body. Edwards has admitted committing numerous crimes around the country, but he denies killing Hack and Drew.
